Can you grow citrus trees in England?

Citrus plants aren't generally hardy in the UK, even though some may be marketed as suitable to grow outdoors in a warm location. A few can tolerate temperatures down to 5°C/41°F (such as some lemons), but others need at least 13°C/55°F (such as calamondins).

Where is the best place to plant citrus trees?

Citrus trees do not like standing water. They prefer sandy soils. A site that receives full sun works best, but at least 50% sun is needed. Planting on the southern side of a house, lake, or other structure that offers wind protection will help protect your tree from the cold.

What month is best to plant citrus?

The optimum times for planting citrus are spring and early autumn. In spring, soil temperatures are rising but not high, and there is some residual soil moisture from winter rains. In early autumn, the tree can establish before the onset of cold winter temperatures.

Do citrus trees need special soil?
