Commonly Asked Questions
Does chamomile come back every year?
Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) is a perennial, so will happily grow back year after year while German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is an annual, so will naturally die back after flowering, having set seed which will grow the following year.
Where does chamomile grow best?
Grow chamomile in full sun and in well-drained soil. It will grow well in poor soils, so does not need much fertiliser and has few pest problems other than aphids. It is not preferred by deer. Since the plants are shallow-rooted, irrigate as needed to keep upper levels of the soil moist but not wet.
What month do you plant chamomile?
Direct sow Chamomile seeds in late autumn, after the first killing frost, so that seeds can naturally cold stratify. For Spring planting, start seeds indoors about 6 weeks before the final frost date. If planting in the Spring, sowing Chamomile seeds outdoors will likely have a weaker germination.
Can you grow chamomile in the UK?
Both Common Chamomile, Chamaemelum nobile, Chamomile Lawn and German chamomile, Matricaria recutita can be grown in the UK, in the ground, in raised beds, or even in containers. Chamomile can also be used to create an occasional use lawn or as ground cover in a sunny spot.
Does chamomile grow well in pots?
Chamomile grows well in containers. As long as you provide the right conditions, it shouldn't suffer from being container-grown. Just be sure you start with a pot that is large enough to contain it. Roman chamomile is a good choice because it only grows to about a foot (30 cm) tall.
